docomo has the largest market share of any of the Japanese carriers (though in recent years this share has been decreasing).

docomo has good English documentation located at Let's make i-mode contents, although it is not as up to date as the Japanese documentation.

i-mode browser 1.0 vs. 2.0

In summer 2009, docomo announced its i-mode browser 2.0. The i-mode browser 2.0 seems to really just be a bunch of improvements to the existing i-mode browser, and provides developers with a baseline expectation for all new docomo handsets. However, when talking about the browser 1.0, things get confusing, as until this point, docomo had never distinguished between different browsers, instead having features dependent on the model. For instance, does the i-mode browser 1.0 support xhtml? Well, that depends on the handset. As such, when referring to the browser 1.0, one should always confirm that a particular model supports a given feature or not, unless otherwise mentioned.

i-mode-browser 1.0

most i-mode-browser 1.0 handsets support CSS in conjunction with XHTML, albeit only in a limited fashion. ドコモ端末でCSSを利用するには is a Japanese blog article that outlines these restrictions, which are

  1. XML declaration and DOCTYPE must be present
  2. CSS cannot be in an external file or the header, i.e., only inline css
  3. Extension must be .xhtml (or mime-type must be application/xhtml+xml)

docomo's listing of new features mentions that new handsets will support both a VGA and legacy QVGA mode. To enable the VGA mode, you need to set a meta tag, the value of which is unspecified, but according to, if you set a meta tag with

<meta name="disparea" content="qvga" />

contents will be displayed in QVGA mode, whereas

<meta name="disparea" content="vga" />

will cause them to be displayed in VGA mode.
